Pepper Lunch (Japanese Sizzling Beef Plate)

  • Author: Alex Rochdi
  • Total Time: 25
  • Yield: 2-3 1x

Description

Pepper Lunch is a popular Japanese DIY-style sizzling beef dish served on a hot iron plate. Thinly sliced beef is cooked with a buttery, savory soy-based sauce, fresh vegetables, and a generous sprinkle of black pepper. The hot plate keeps the meal warm and allows you to cook the beef to your desired doneness. It’s quick, flavorful, and perfect for recreating at home!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Beef & Marinade:

  • 1 lb (16 oz) thinly sliced ribeye or sirloin beef
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp mirin (or rice vinegar)
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper (adjust to taste)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

For the Vegetables & Rice:

  • 2 cups cooked white rice (preferably jasmine or short-grain)
  • 1 cup corn kernels (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup bean sprouts (optional)
  • 2 green onions, chopped

For the Sauce (optional but recommended):

  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tsp sesame oil

Instructions

  • πŸ”ͺ Prepare the Marinade:
In a bowl, combine soy sauce, oyster sauce, mirin, minced garlic, sesame oil, and black pepper. Add the thinly sliced beef, tossing to coat. Let it marinate for at least 10–15 minutes.
  • 🍳 Prepare the Sizzling Plate:
If using a cast-iron skillet or hot plate, heat it over high heat until it’s very hot. Add a small pat of butter and let it melt, coating the surface.
  • πŸ₯© Cook the Beef:
Arrange the marinated beef slices around the hot plate in a thin layer. Add the sliced onions and corn kernels to the center. Let the beef sear for 1–2 minutes without stirring to develop a nice crust.
  • 🍚 Add the Rice:
Place the cooked rice in the center of the hot plate. Drizzle with a bit of the optional sauce and sprinkle with more black pepper for extra flavor.
  • πŸ”₯ Sizzle and Serve:
Allow the dish to continue sizzling on the plate. Stir and mix everything together to cook the beef evenly. Garnish with chopped green onions before serving.

Notes

  • Beef: Use well-marbled beef for the best flavor. Ribeye is ideal, but sirloin works well too.
  • Hot Plate Substitute: If you don’t have a sizzling plate, a cast-iron skillet retains heat similarly.
  • Variations: Add mushrooms, bell peppers, or a fried egg for extra texture and flavor.
  • Spice Level: Adjust the black pepper according to your taste preference.
