Description

This Pepper Lunch-Style Sizzling Beef Rice is a delicious homemade version of the popular Japanese fast-casual dish known for its sizzling hot plate presentation. Tender slices of beef, fluffy rice, sweet corn, and green onions are served on a hot skillet with a bold, savory-peppery sauce. The meat cooks right on the plate, blending beautifully with the sauce for that signature Pepper Lunch taste!

Ingredients

Scale

Ingredients:

  • For the Beef & Rice:

    • 1 lb thinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin works best)
    • 4 cups cooked white rice (preferably day-old)
    • 1 cup sweet corn kernels (canned or fresh)
    • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
    • 2 green onions, finely chopped
    • Freshly ground black pepper, to taste
  • For the Pepper Sauce:

    • 3 tbsp soy sauce
    • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
    • 1 tbsp mirin (or substitute with a little sugar and water)
    • 1 tbsp garlic, finely minced
    • 1 tbsp honey or sugar
    • 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper (adjust to taste)
    • 1 tbsp water
  • Optional Toppings:

    • Extra butter
    • Fried garlic
    • Egg (cracked on the hot plate to cook alongside)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Sauce:
In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, mirin, garlic, honey, black pepper, and water until well combined. Set aside.

  2. Heat the Skillet:
Place a cast iron skillet or a heavy pan over medium-high heat until it’s smoking hot. This replicates the sizzling plate effect of Pepper Lunch.

  3. Assemble the Dish:
Add 1 tbsp of butter to the center of the hot skillet. Quickly place the cooked rice around the butter, leaving a space in the middle for the beef. Arrange the thinly sliced beef in the center and sprinkle corn and green onions on top of the rice.

  4. Sizzle and Cook:
Drizzle the pepper sauce evenly over the beef and rice. Season generously with freshly ground black pepper. Let the beef sizzle and sear without stirring for about 1–2 minutes to develop a slight crust.

  5. Stir and Combine:
Using a spatula, stir the beef, rice, and vegetables together on the hot skillet until the beef is fully cooked (about 3–4 minutes). Add more butter if desired for extra richness.

  6. Serve:
Serve the dish sizzling hot straight from the skillet, with optional fried garlic or a freshly cracked egg if desired.

Notes

  • Beef Tips: Freeze the beef slightly for easier thin slicing.
  • Substitutions: Chicken, pork, or tofu can replace beef for variety.
  • Extra Flavor: Add a splash of sesame oil or a dash of chili flakes for a spicy kick.
