  • 2 tablespoons butter cubed
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper
  • 1/8 teaspoon turmeric optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder optional

Instructions
 

  • Melt butter in a saucepan over low heat. Once it starts to bubble, whisk in the flour.
  • Whisk the flour and butter together for 3–4 minutes, until a golden-colored paste forms.
  • Gradually add the milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Bring to a gentle boil.
  • Reduce heat to low and continue to whisk for 5 more minutes as the sauce thickens.
  • Season with salt, pepper, and optional turmeric or onion powder to taste. Stir in herbs or cheese if desired.

Notes

Use this base in pasta, casseroles, or veggie bakes. Add cheese for a quick mac and cheese or mix in herbs for a fresh twist.
